The Book of Praise.
If joy shall at Thy bidding fly,
And griefs dark day come on, We, in our turn, would meekly cry,
Father ! Thy will be done !
Should friends misjudge, or foes defame,
Or brethren faithless prove, Then, like Thine own, be all our aim
To conquer them by love.
Kept peaceful in the midst of strife,
Forgiving and forgiven, O may we lead the pilgrim's life,
And follow Thee to Heaven!
John Hampden Gurney. 1838.

Eternal Beam of Light Divine,
Fountain of unexhausted love, In Whom the Father's glories shine
Through earth beneath, and Heaven above:
Jesu ! the weary wanderer's Rest!
Give me Thy easy yoke to bear; With stedfast patience arm my breast,
With spotless love, and lowly fear.
{Thankful I take the cup from Thee, Prepar'd and mingled by Thy skill:
Though bitter to the taste it be, Powerful the wounded soul to heal.
Be Thou, O Rock of Ages, nigh !
So shall each murmuring thought be gone : And grief, and fear, and care shall fly
As clouds before the mid-day sun.
